Congonhas - Deputado Freitas Nobre
A Journey Through Time
1936 — 2007
Aeroporto de Congonhas opened on 12 April 1936, founded by aviator Lucas Nogueira Garcez. Located just 8 km from the city centre, it quickly became Sao Paulos primary airport.
VASP (Viacao Aerea Sao Paulo) established Congonhas as its main hub in the late 1940s, operating the Ponte Aerea - the worlds first shuttle service - to Rio de Janeiros Santos Dumont.
On 17 July 2007, TAM Flight 3054 overran runway 35L after landing in heavy rain, resulting in 199 fatalities. The disaster led to major safety reforms across Brazilian aviation.
