Requirements by Operation Type

Private flights also require overflight/landing permits unless exempted as EU/EEA registered. Standard Schengen entry procedures apply.

All non-scheduled flights require permits from ICETRA at least 24 hours in advance. Technical and medical stops exempt from landing permits.

Covered by bilateral air service agreements and EEA agreement provisions. EU/EEA carriers generally exempt from individual permits.

Overflight Permit

Remarks:

Permits mandatory for all non-scheduled flights. Permit number must be included in the flight plan. EU/EEA registered aircraft on scheduled services may be exempt.

Application Process:

Submit completed application form to ICETRA at least 24 hours before departure. Include certificate of registration, airworthiness certificate, noise certificate, AOC (if applicable), insurance certificate, flight plan with entry/exit points, and description of flight purpose.

Landing Permit

  • Fees: Based on aircraft weight and passenger count; settle within designated timeframe
Remarks:

Required for non-scheduled flights landing in Iceland, excluding technical stops, medical flights, and EU/EEA registered aircraft. Permit number must be included in the flight plan.

Cabotage

Prohibited for non-EEA carriers. EEA carriers may operate cabotage under EEA agreement provisions.

Iceland is an EEA and Schengen member state but not an EU member. ICETRA handles all aviation permits. Large oceanic FIR managed by Isavia. Permit fees based on weight/distance/passengers.
