Winglet

Winglet is a vertical or near-vertical extension at the wingtip that reduces induced drag by disrupting the wingtip vortex. By reducing drag, winglets improve fuel efficiency (typically 3-5% savings), increase range, and improve climb performance.

Types:

  • Blended winglet: Smooth curve from wing to vertical tip (B737NG, A320)
  • Split-tip (shark) winglet: Upper and lower tip extensions (B737 MAX)
  • Sharklet: Airbus term for blended winglets (A320neo)
  • Raked wingtip: Extended wing sweep at the tip (B787, B777X)

Winglets are one of the most visible and cost-effective aerodynamic improvements in modern aviation.
