Wind Sock
Wind Sock (also windsock or wind cone) is a conical fabric tube mounted on a swiveling pole at an airport that provides a visual indication of wind direction and approximate speed. It is one of the simplest yet most useful tools at any aerodrome.
- Points in the direction the wind is blowing toward (downwind)
- Fully extended: wind approximately 15 knots or more
- At 5 knots, roughly one-quarter extended
- Illuminated at night at airports with night operations
- Located near runway thresholds and in the traffic pattern
- Required equipment at all aerodromes per ICAO Annex 14
