VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range)

VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) is a ground-based radio navigation system operating in the 108.0–117.95 MHz frequency band. It transmits 360 radials (magnetic bearings) that aircraft can use to determine their position relative to the station and navigate along airways.

  • Standard VOR range: approximately 200 NM at high altitude
  • Often co-located with DME for distance information (VOR/DME)
  • VORTAC combines VOR with military TACAN
  • Being gradually decommissioned as GPS-based navigation expands, but still a critical backup
