VMC
VMC (Visual Meteorological Conditions) describes weather conditions meeting or exceeding the minimum requirements for VFR flight. The specific VMC minimums vary by airspace class but generally require:
- Visibility of 3 statute miles (5 km) or more
- Distance from clouds: 500 ft below, 1,000 ft above, 2,000 ft horizontally (in controlled airspace)
In Class G airspace below 1,200 ft AGL during daytime, reduced VMC minimums may apply (1 statute mile visibility, clear of clouds). The opposite of VMC is IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions).
