Touchdown Zone — The first portion of the runway beyond the threshold, designated for landing.
Touchdown Zone is the first 3,000 feet (900 m) of runway beyond the threshold, or the first third of the runway — whichever is less. It is the area where the aircraft should make initial contact with the runway surface during a normal landing.
- Marked with touchdown zone markings (pairs of rectangular blocks) on precision approach runways
- Touchdown zone lights (TDZL): two rows of white lights embedded in the runway surface
- RVR transmissometers are positioned at the touchdown zone for RVR measurement
- Landing beyond the touchdown zone increases the risk of runway overrun
