Thrust Reverser

Thrust Reverser is a system that redirects jet engine exhaust forward (or partially forward) to produce a braking force, helping decelerate the aircraft after landing. Thrust reversers significantly reduce brake and tire wear and shorten landing distance, especially on wet or contaminated runways.

Types:

  • Cascade: Blocker doors and cascade vanes redirect the fan airflow (common on high-bypass turbofans)
  • Clamshell: Two doors close over the exhaust nozzle and deflect thrust forward
  • Bucket (target): Two bucket-shaped doors swing into the exhaust stream

Thrust reversers are typically used only on the ground and are automatically locked out in flight as a safety measure.
