Slats
Slats are aerodynamic surfaces on the leading edge of the wing that extend forward and down to increase the wing camber and delay airflow separation at high angles of attack. Slats work in conjunction with trailing edge flaps to reduce the stall speed and allow slower approach and landing speeds.
When extended, slats create a slot between themselves and the wing, channeling high-energy air over the upper wing surface to maintain smooth airflow. Slats are typically deployed automatically by the FMS or manually by the pilot along with flap settings.
