SID

SID (Standard Instrument Departure) is a published flight procedure that aircraft follow immediately after takeoff from an airport. SIDs are designed to provide an orderly transition from the runway to the en-route airway structure while ensuring terrain and obstacle clearance.

SIDs typically specify:

  • Initial heading or track after takeoff
  • Altitude restrictions at specific waypoints
  • Speed restrictions
  • Navigation fixes and transitions to en-route airways

SIDs are designed to reduce controller workload, minimize radio communications, and optimize traffic flow. They often incorporate noise abatement procedures to reduce aircraft noise over populated areas.

Modern SIDs are increasingly RNAV (Area Navigation) based, using GPS/GNSS waypoints rather than ground-based navaids, allowing for more precise and flexible departure paths. The counterpart for arrivals is the STAR (Standard Terminal Arrival Route).
