Runway Excursion
Runway Excursion is an event in which an aircraft veers off the side of a runway (lateral excursion) or overruns the end of a runway (longitudinal excursion/overrun) during takeoff or landing. It is one of the most frequent types of aviation accidents worldwide.
- Overruns account for the majority of runway excursions
- Contributing factors: wet/contaminated runways, tailwinds, unstabilized approaches, late touchdowns, delayed braking
- EMAS and RESA are designed to mitigate overrun consequences
- Prevention: stabilized approach criteria, go-around policies, landing distance assessment
