RNAV (Area Navigation)
RNAV (Area Navigation) is a method of navigation that allows aircraft to fly on any desired flight path within the coverage of ground- or space-based navigation aids, or within the limits of onboard systems. Unlike conventional navigation that requires flying directly to or from ground-based navaids, RNAV enables more efficient routing.
- Uses GPS, DME/DME, VOR/DME, or INS inputs
- Enables direct routing and fuel savings
- Required for many modern SIDs and STARs
- RNAV approaches (e.g., RNAV GPS) are replacing traditional procedures worldwide
