QFE
QFE is an altimeter pressure setting that causes the altimeter to indicate height above the aerodrome reference point (i.e., zero when on the ground). It is primarily used in some countries (Russia, China, parts of Eastern Europe) for approach and departure operations.
- Gives the pilot direct height above the runway
- Not widely used in Western aviation — QNH is preferred
- Useful in military operations and some helicopter operations
- Must be converted to QNH for en-route flight
