Noise Certification
Noise Certification is the ICAO Annex 16 / FAR Part 36 system of classifying aircraft by their noise output, measured at specific points during approach, flyover, and sideline. Aircraft must meet noise standards to be certified for operation.
- Chapter 3: Older jets (being phased out at many airports)
- Chapter 4: Current standard — 10 dB cumulative margin below Chapter 3
- Chapter 14: Newest and strictest standard — 17 dB cumulative margin below Chapter 3
Noise certification affects:
- Airport access — many airports restrict Chapter 3 or older aircraft
- Operating hours — noise-sensitive airports limit night operations based on certification
- Landing fees — many airports charge higher fees for noisier aircraft
- Noise abatement procedures — preferential runways, CDAs, and departure profiles
