Nacelle
Nacelle is the streamlined housing or cowling that encloses an aircraft engine. It is aerodynamically shaped to minimize drag, provide engine cooling, contain engine components, and in some designs, provide acoustic treatment to reduce noise.
- Contains the engine, thrust reverser, fire detection/suppression systems, and accessories
- Inlet cowl directs air into the engine efficiently at various speeds and angles
- Fan cowl doors open for maintenance access to the engine
- On turbofan engines, the nacelle defines the bypass duct
- Nacelle anti-ice systems prevent ice formation on the inlet
