MSL

MSL (Mean Sea Level) is the average level of the ocean surface, used as the standard reference datum for altitude measurement in aviation. Airport elevations, obstacle heights, and altimeter readings (when set to QNH) are expressed in feet or meters above MSL.

MSL provides a common reference plane worldwide, although local mean sea level varies slightly from region to region due to Earth shape and gravitational differences.
