Maximum Takeoff Weight
MTOW (Maximum Takeoff Weight) is the maximum total weight of the aircraft (including fuel, passengers, cargo, and the aircraft itself) at which the pilot is allowed to attempt takeoff. MTOW is set by the manufacturer based on structural limits, engine performance, and regulatory certification.
MTOW directly affects airport landing fees (many airports charge per ton of MTOW), pavement strength requirements (PCN/ACN classification), and takeoff performance calculations. The actual takeoff weight may be further limited by runway length, temperature, altitude, and obstacle clearance requirements.
