Holding Pattern
Holding Pattern is a predetermined maneuver that keeps an aircraft within a specified airspace while awaiting further clearance from ATC. The standard pattern is a racetrack shape with right turns, one-minute inbound legs (at or below 14,000 ft), and a specified holding fix.
ATC issues holding clearances when traffic volume exceeds approach capacity, weather delays arrivals, or an airport is temporarily closed. Pilots must manage fuel carefully while holding, as each circuit takes approximately 4-5 minutes.
