Fuel Dump
Fuel Dump (fuel jettison) is the intentional release of fuel from an aircraft in flight to reduce its weight. This is necessary when an aircraft must land shortly after takeoff and is above the maximum landing weight.
Not all aircraft have fuel dump capability — typically only long-range widebody aircraft (B747, B777, A330, A340, A380). Aircraft without fuel jettison capability (B737, A320) are certified with maximum landing weights closer to maximum takeoff weight, or must burn off fuel by flying or accept an overweight landing if needed.
Fuel is dumped from wing tip nozzles at a safe altitude (typically above 6,000 ft). The fuel atomizes and evaporates before reaching the ground.
