Feeder Route

A Feeder Route is a published route that connects the en-route airway structure to the Initial Approach Fix (IAF) of an instrument approach procedure. It bridges the gap between the last en-route fix and the beginning of the approach.

  • Depicted on instrument approach charts with course and distance
  • Includes a minimum altitude for obstacle clearance
  • Allows pilots transitioning from an airway to the approach without radar vectors
  • At busy airports, ATC often provides radar vectors instead of feeder routes
  • Important at non-radar airports where pilots must navigate the full published procedure
