Extended Twin Operations

Extended Twin Operations (ETOPS) is the regulatory framework that permits twin-engine aircraft to operate on routes that take them more than 60 minutes (single-engine cruise speed) from an adequate diversion airport.

Before ETOPS, twins were restricted to routes within 60 minutes of a suitable airport. ETOPS certification allows progressively longer diversion times:

  • ETOPS-120: Up to 120 minutes from a diversion airport
  • ETOPS-180: Up to 180 minutes — enables most transoceanic routes
  • ETOPS-330: Boeing 787 certified — enables any route worldwide
  • ETOPS-370: Airbus A350 certified — the highest current rating

Certification requires proven engine reliability, maintenance programs, crew training, and MEL restrictions specific to ETOPS flights.
