ETOPS
ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) allows twin-engine aircraft to fly routes that are more than 60 minutes from a diversion airport. Before ETOPS, twin-engine aircraft were restricted to routes within 60 minutes of an airport.
ETOPS ratings (e.g., ETOPS-120, ETOPS-180, ETOPS-370) indicate the maximum diversion time permitted. This requires enhanced aircraft reliability, additional equipment, crew training, and maintenance standards. The Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 hold ETOPS-370 certification.
