Density Altitude

Density Altitude is the pressure altitude corrected for temperature deviations from standard atmosphere. It represents the altitude at which the air density equals the actual density the aircraft is experiencing, and directly affects aircraft performance.

High density altitude (hot, high, humid conditions) degrades performance:

  • Reduced engine power output
  • Reduced propeller/rotor efficiency
  • Reduced lift (requires higher true airspeed)
  • Longer takeoff roll and reduced climb rate

Pilots calculate density altitude before every takeoff from high-elevation or hot-climate airports to ensure adequate performance margins.
