Cold Weather Operations

Cold Weather Operations encompass the additional procedures, inspections, and precautions required when operating aircraft in temperatures at or below 0°C. Cold conditions affect aircraft systems, engine performance, and aerodynamic surfaces.

  • Pre-flight: Clean aircraft concept — no ice, snow, or frost on critical surfaces before takeoff
  • De/anti-icing: Application of Type I (de-icing) and Type II/IV (anti-icing) fluids with holdover time limits
  • Cold-soaked fuel: Fuel temperature monitoring to prevent fuel freezing (Jet A freeze point: -40°C)
  • Altimeter corrections: Cold temperature corrections applied to approach minima when temperatures are significantly below ISA
  • Engine start: Extended warm-up procedures and oil temperature monitoring
  • Braking action: Contaminated runway assessments using RCAM (Runway Condition Assessment Matrix)
