AMSL

AMSL (Above Mean Sea Level) is the standard vertical reference for aviation altitudes. Airport elevations, terrain heights on charts, and altimeter readings (when set to QNH) are expressed as AMSL.

This provides a common reference plane so all aircraft and obstacles can be compared vertically, regardless of the terrain elevation below.
