1998

Kuala Lumpur International Airport opened on 27 June 1998, designed by Kisho Kurokawa. The airport's concept of "airport in the forest, forest in the airport" preserved 1,800 hectares of tropical rainforest.

2010s
2014

KLIA2 opened in 2014 as a dedicated low-cost carrier terminal, becoming the world's largest purpose-built LCCT and the primary base for AirAsia Group.

2019

KLIA handled over 62 million passengers in 2019, making it the busiest airport in Southeast Asia after Singapore Changi and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi.
