Hong Kong International Airport
A Journey Through Time
1998 — 2024
Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok opened on 6 July 1998, replacing the legendary Kai Tak Airport. Built on a reclaimed island, it was one of the most expensive infrastructure projects in history.
HKIA was named the worlds best airport by Skytrax in 2007, cementing its reputation for operational efficiency, cleanliness, and passenger experience among mega-hub airports.
The Three-Runway System (3RS) project was completed in 2024, adding a third runway built on 650 hectares of reclaimed land, increasing capacity to handle 120 million passengers annually.
