Mariscal Sucre Intl
A Journey Through Time
2013 — 2019
The new Quito Mariscal Sucre International Airport opened on 20 February 2013 in Tababela, 18 km east of the city, replacing the legendary in-city airport surrounded by volcanic mountains.
At 2,400 metres elevation, the new airport was designed with a longer runway (4,100 m) to allow fully loaded widebody aircraft to depart without altitude-related payload restrictions.
The old Quito airport (SEQU) was decommissioned and transformed into Parque Bicentenario, one of the largest urban parks in South America — a model for airport-to-park conversion.
