Aeroporto Internacional do Recife/Guararapes was inaugurated in 1958, built on the historic site of the 1648-1649 Battles of Guararapes — considered the birthplace of the Brazilian Army.

2004
The airport was renamed Gilberto Freyre International Airport in 2004 in honour of the influential Brazilian sociologist and author born in Recife.
2010s
2014
A new passenger terminal opened in 2014, transforming the airport into the main gateway for northeast Brazil with a modern design reflecting the region's tropical character.
