Auckland Intl
A Journey Through Time
1966 — 2023
Auckland International Airport opened at Mangere on 29 January 1966, replacing the Whenuapai military base. It was New Zealand's first purpose-built international airport.
The international terminal was expanded for the growing Pacific Island and Asian traffic, establishing Auckland as the primary gateway to New Zealand and the South Pacific.
Auckland Airport began a $3.9 billion NZD infrastructure programme, including a new domestic terminal and combined international-domestic processing facility, the largest construction project in New Zealand.
