Benito Juarez Intl
A Journey Through Time
1931 — 2007
Mexico City's central airport opened in 1931 in the former lakebed of Lake Texcoco. Its location in the heart of the capital, at 2,230 metres elevation, makes it one of the highest major airports in the world.
Terminal 1 was rebuilt for the 1968 Olympics and expanded in 1970, establishing AICM as Latin America's busiest airport with connections to all major cities in the Americas.
Terminal 2 opened in 2007, doubling the airport's capacity. Despite plans for a replacement airport (eventually cancelled in 2018), AICM remains Mexico's primary international gateway.
