M.R. Stefanik
A Journey Through Time
1923 — 2012
Regular air service to Bratislava began in 1923, when the newly formed Czechoslovak Airlines started scheduled flights between Prague and Bratislava.
Planning for the present Bratislava airport started in 1947, and construction began in 1948.
The new airport opened in 1951 under the name Bratislava Ivanka, taken from the nearby village of Ivanka pri Dunaji.
Shortly after Slovakia became independent in 1993, the airport was renamed after General Milan Rastislav Stefanik, the Slovak aviator and statesman.
A new passenger terminal handling both arrivals and departures was completed in July 2012.
