?stanbul Airport
A Journey Through Time
2018 — 2023
Istanbul Airport opened on 29 October 2018, the 95th anniversary of the Turkish Republic. Built on the Black Sea coast, it was designed to eventually become the world's largest airport with a capacity of 200 million passengers.
All operations transferred from the historic Atatürk Airport on 6 April 2019 in the "Great Move" — the largest airport relocation in history, involving 47,000 tonnes of equipment moved in 45 hours.
Istanbul Airport became the busiest airport in Europe by passenger traffic in 2023, surpassing London Heathrow, as Turkish Airlines expanded its global hub operations.
