Lisbon
A Journey Through Time
1942 — 2016
Lisbon Airport opened in 1942 at Portela, during World War II. Portugal's neutrality made Lisbon a crucial hub for transatlantic flights, espionage, and diplomatic travel between Europe and the Americas.
Terminal 2 opened in 2007 as a dedicated low-cost carrier terminal, helping Lisbon become one of Europe's fastest-growing tourist destinations.
The airport was renamed Humberto Delgado Airport in 2016 in honour of the Portuguese general who opposed the Salazar dictatorship and was assassinated by the regime's secret police in 1965.
