Faro
A Journey Through Time
1965 — 2022
Faro Airport was inaugurated on 11 July 1965 by Portugal's then President, Américo Tomás, giving the Algarve its own airport.
A new passenger terminal building opened at Faro in 1989, the first of two major developments the airport saw between its opening and the 2000s.
The passenger terminal was enlarged in 2001, a little over a decade after the new terminal building had opened in 1989.
An expansion programme announced in February 2010 was carried out in two phases, with Phase II starting in 2011 and finishing in 2013.
The airport officially took the name Gago Coutinho in September 2022, honouring the Algarve born admiral who made the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic in 1922.
