Innsbruck
A Journey Through Time
1925 — 1980
Innsbruck's first airport opened on 1 June 1925 in the Reichenau district on the east side of the city, five years after the Tyrolean government decided to build an air station.
The airport moved west to its current site at Kranebitten, where the new field opened on 15 January 1948.
The Tiroler Flughafenbetriebsgesellschaft, the company set up to operate Innsbruck airport, was founded on 8 October 1954.
The 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck were the airport's first big test. It faced the same challenge again when the Winter Games returned to the city in 1976.
Scheduled traffic got a boost in 1980 with the start of regular routes from Innsbruck to Vienna and from Innsbruck to Zurich.
