1948

Malpensa Airport was rebuilt in 1948 on the site of a World War II military airfield near the town of Somma Lombardo, 49 km northwest of Milan.

1990s
1998

Terminal 1, designed by architect Mario Botta, opened in 1998 as Alitalia attempted to create a major intercontinental hub to rival Rome Fiumicino. The "Malpensa 2000" project transformed the airport.

2010s
2010

The Malpensa Express rail link was upgraded, and the airport consolidated its role as northern Italy's main international gateway and EasyJet's largest base outside the UK.
