1930

Mines Field opened as the Los Angeles Municipal Airport in 1930, located on a 640-acre site in Westchester. It replaced the old Vail Field and Rogers Airport.

1960s
1961

The iconic Theme Building, a space-age structure resembling a flying saucer atop concrete legs, opened in 1961 and became the enduring symbol of LAX and mid-century Los Angeles.

1980s
1984

LAX underwent a massive expansion for the 1984 Summer Olympics, adding the Tom Bradley International Terminal — the largest international terminal in North America at the time.
