Houston Intercontinental Airport opened on 8 June 1969, designed to handle the jet age. Its location 23 miles north of downtown was controversial but allowed for unlimited expansion.

1990s
1990

Continental Airlines (later United) built Houston into a major connecting hub, with Terminal E opening in 1990 as the dedicated international facility for Latin American routes.

1997

The airport was renamed George Bush Intercontinental Airport in 1997 in honour of the 41st President of the United States, who resided in Houston.
