Hartsfield - Jackson Atlanta Intl
A Journey Through Time
1926 — 1998
Candler Field opened in 1926 on the site of an abandoned auto racetrack in Atlanta. It was named after Coca-Cola magnate Asa Candler, who had leased the land to the city.
The current Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport terminal opened on 21 September 1980, featuring an innovative midfield concourse design connected by an automated people mover — a model later copied by airports worldwide.
Atlanta became the world's busiest airport by passenger traffic in 1998, a title it held for over two decades. It was renamed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in 2003.
