Chopin
A Journey Through Time
1934 — 2015
Warsaw Okęcie Airport opened in 1934 as a modest civil airfield on the southern outskirts of the Polish capital, replacing the earlier Mokotów airfield.
A new international terminal opened in 1969, and the airport was renamed Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport in 2001 in honour of Poland's most famous composer, who was born near Warsaw.
Chopin Airport became the largest airport in Central and Eastern Europe (excluding Russia) by passenger numbers, handling over 18 million passengers as LOT Polish Airlines expanded its hub operations.
