Schiphol
A Journey Through Time
1916 — 1992
Schiphol began as a military airfield in 1916 during World War I, located on the site of a former lake — its name literally means "ship hollow," reflecting the area's maritime history.
The current single-terminal concept was inaugurated in 1967, a radical departure from the multi-terminal approach used by most airports. All gates are accessible from one central plaza.
KLM and Northwest Airlines formed the first transatlantic joint venture, making Schiphol a major global connecting hub and one of Europe's top three airports by passenger traffic.
