Munich Airport Franz Josef Strauß opened on 17 May 1992, replacing the cramped Munich-Riem airport. The entire relocation was completed in a single night, moving 200 aircraft and 10,000 employees.

2003
Terminal 2 opened in 2003 as a dedicated Star Alliance hub for Lufthansa, featuring a distinctive glass and steel design by Koch + Partner and a European-first pier satellite concept.

2015
Munich Airport was named Europe's only 5-Star Airport by Skytrax in 2015, a rating it maintained for multiple consecutive years — the only airport outside Asia to achieve this distinction.
