1970s
1979

Murtala Muhammed International Airport opened in 1979, named after the Nigerian head of state who was assassinated in 1976. It replaced Ikeja Airport as Lagos's primary international facility.

2000s
2007

A new international terminal opened in 2007, providing Nigeria's 200 million people with a modernised gateway. Lagos remains the busiest airport in West Africa.

2020s
2022

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria began a comprehensive renovation of all terminals, and Lagos Airport handled over 9 million passengers as Nigeria's aviation sector rapidly grew.
