1940s
1941

Dorval Airport opened in 1941 as a wartime ferry base for transferring military aircraft to Europe. After the war, it became Montreal's primary commercial airport.

1970s
1975

Mirabel Airport opened in 1975 as a "second airport" for international flights, but the split operation proved unworkable. All flights returned to Dorval in 2004 and Mirabel was eventually closed.

2000s
2004

The airport was renamed Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in honour of Canada's 15th Prime Minister, and underwent a major expansion of the international jetty.
