Gander Intl
A Journey Through Time
1938 — 2001
Gander opened in 1938 after construction began in 1936. The first landing came on 11 January, when Captain Douglas Fraser flew in aboard a Fox Moth.
In 1941 the field was renamed RCAF Station Gander and became a key stop for RAF Ferry Command flying newly built aircraft across the Atlantic.
In March 1946 the Royal Canadian Air Force handed operation of the airfield back to the government of the Dominion of Newfoundland.
Gander's current passenger terminal opened in 1959.
After the 11 September 2001 attacks closed US airspace, Gander took in 38 diverted airliners.
